An introduction to fragrance families and scent composition

Florals were where my love of scent began with my Dido (grandfather) — but every fragrance finds its own way into the heart.

This olfactive guide is an invitation to explore scent by feeling, memory, and composition – a quiet map to help you discover what resonates.

Amber (Oriental)

Warm, rich, and sensual, with notes of vanilla, resins, and spice. Amber fragrances are known for their depth and glow — one I return to again and again.

Chypre

Elegant and structured, Chypre fragrances balance bright citrus with mossy depth and earthy patchouli — often softened with florals or fruit.

They feel refined, intriguing, and beautifully complex, like a signature you don’t forget.

Gourmand

Irresistibly comforting, Gourmand fragrances feature dessert-like notes such as vanilla, caramel, chocolate, and coffee.

They feel warm and indulgent — like sweetness melting into memory.

Floral

A celebration of petals and blooms, from rose and jasmine to lily and peony. Floral scents can be delicate and airy, or layered into full, romantic bouquets.

Fresh

(Citrus • Green • Water • Aromatic)

Bright, clean, and invigorating, Fresh fragrances capture the feeling of open air — from sparkling citrus to dewy greens, ocean mist, and herbal clarity.

They often feel uplifting, effortless, and quietly energising.

Fougère

A timeless fragrance family built on lavender, soft tonka warmth, and oakmoss depth — crisp, aromatic, and unmistakably classic.

Fougère scents feel polished and confident, with a fresh masculinity that wears beautifully on anyone.

Leather

Smoky, dry, and deeply evocative, Leather fragrances recall worn hides, tobacco, wood tars, and quiet firelight.

They feel bold yet intimate — the scent of strength, craft, and atmosphere.

Woods

Grounded notes such as cedar, sandalwood, patchouli, and vetiver. Woody fragrances feel earthy, refined, and quietly powerful — loved across masculine and unisex profiles.
